Director Hanu Raghavapudi first came across the story for Sita Ramam in 2007 when he read a book that contained an unopened letter. The letter was written by a mother to her son, and Hanu learned that their family was from Vijayawada and their son lived in a hostel. The letter was mainly about the mother asking about her son’s well-being and urging him to come home.

Hanu thought that the story had potential and with the addition of an Army backdrop suggested by Rajkumar Kandamudi, the script for Sita Ramam was developed.
